Puerta A07

Hace un par de meses me vino la idea de tatuarme un caracol. No me refiero a una caracola de mar de las que guardan el ruido de las olas en su interior, no. Un caracol. Un caracol de los que se arrastran y dejan babas. Y que además están buenísimos.

Hace dos semanas mi vecina me escribió pidiéndome ayuda porque tenía un caracol en su casa y le daba pánico. Un animalito que no vuela, que anda lento, que se esconde cuando tiene miedo. ¿Cómo se le puede tener miedo?

En el momento en que se me ocurrió lo del tatuaje algo me hizo click. Tenía sentido por muchos motivos. Pienso en un caracol y pienso en que lleva la casa consigo, que estará bien allí donde esté. Pienso en avanzar lentamente y en la paciencia que yo pocas veces tengo. Pienso en que salen después de la lluvia porque las condiciones climáticas aparentemente adversas les proven con las condiciones más favorables para ellos. Pienso en sus propiedades regenerativas y en que hay mucho que aprender de ellos.

Pienso en un caracol y pienso en el verano y en el olor del romero. Pienso en la paella de domingo y en mojar el pan en el caldito de los caracoles que hace mi abuela. Pienso en ir a recoger caracoles por los huertos después de una tarde lluviosa. Pienso en mi abuelo.

El miércoles de la semana pasada recibí una llamada que llevaba tiempo pensando que algún día llegaría pero que ojalá no hubiese llegado nunca. Ja està, me dijo mi madre, a les 9:05. Eran las 9:50 y eso significaba que hacía ya 45 minutos que mi abuelo se había ido. Me sentí más lejos que nunca y empecé a pensar en el timing de las cosas. Menos mal que era por la mañana, menos mal que no trabajaba.

Pude coger un avión esa misma tarde porque no tenía que estar en ningún otro lugar, ni tenía nada más importante que hacer. En cualquier caso, a cualquier otra hora, en cualquier otra situación, ¿qué podría haber sido más importante?

Tengo 28 años y doy gracias porque es la primera vez que tengo que pasar por algo así. Y doy gracias de que ha sido mi abuelo, a sus ochenta y muchos años, y que estuvo plantando tomates hasta cuatro días antes de irse. Pero al ser la primera vez se siente extraño. He visto películas, he leído libros, he escuchado historias sobre la muerte y sobre el duelo. Pero no es lo mismo. Es como la primera vez que te rompen el corazón: duele mucho y no sabes qué pasa después, no llegas a entender que cicatrizará.

Vi llorar a personas que nunca había visto llorar. Me abrazó gente que nunca había abrazado. Me di cuenta de cuán surrealista es el ritual que se lleva a cabo para despedirse de un ser querido. Nada tiene sentido. Me doy cuenta de que a los sentimientos no se les ha encontrado un espacio apropiado en el mundo material. Llego a pensar que lo más justo sería que los cuerpos se desvaneciesen junto con el alma.

Me pone muy triste pensar que él ya no está y mi vida sigue igual. ¿Cómo es eso ni siquiera posible? Pienso mucho en él desde que se ha ido, y me da mucha rabia pensar que antes no lo hacía. Pienso en todo el tiempo que he estado lejos de casa, en que puede que en los últimos seis años haya pasado menos de 48h con él en total, y en que no hay manera de volver atrás. No soy capaz de recordar si alguna vez le dije que le quería.

Siento que no tengo recuerdos. Los recuerdos lejanos, de cuando era pequeña, se desvanecen. Los recuerdos cercanos son cuatro ratos sin mucho peso, son momentos que no he retenido, recuerdos que no he creado. Siento más que nunca que he estado lejos. Me duele mucho pensar que esto es algo que seguirá pasando, que es algo por lo que volveré a pasar.

Me planteo cosas: dónde estoy, dónde voy, cuál es mi lugar, dónde están los míos.

Escribo esto y nada de lo que digo me parece suficientemente importante, todo es superficial. Siento que no soy nadie para hablar de esto, que no he dicho nada que valga la pena, que no he sacado lo que llevo dentro, dentro. Quizás no lo he hecho, o no sé hacerlo. Quizás es mejor así.

Pienso mucho en los tomates que plantó el sábado, y me pone muy triste pensar que nadie los vaya a cuidar. Nunca antes me había parado a pensar que llegaría un verano en que ya no comería tomaquetes de l’hort de l’auelo.

Gate A07

A couple of months ago, I had the idea of getting a snail tattoo. I don’t mean a seashell, the kind that holds the sound of waves inside, no. A snail. One of those that crawl and leave a trail of slime. And that are also delicious.

Two weeks ago, my neighbor texted me asking for help because she had a snail in her house, and she was terrified. A little creature that doesn’t fly, moves slowly, and hides when it’s scared. How can you be afraid of that?

When the idea of the tattoo came to me, something clicked. It made sense for many reasons. I think of a snail, and I think of how it carries its home with it, how it will be fine wherever it goes. I think of moving slowly and the patience I rarely have. I think of how they come out after the rain because what seem to be adverse weather conditions provide the best environment for them. I think of their regenerative properties and how much there is to learn from them.

I think of a snail, and I think of summer and the smell of rosemary. I think of Sunday paella and dipping bread into the broth of the snails my grandmother cooks. I think of going out to gather snails in the gardens after a rainy afternoon. I think of my grandfather.

Last Wednesday, I received a call I had long been dreading but hoped would never come. “It’s over,” my mother said, “at 9:05”. It was then 9:50, which meant that 45 minutes had passed since my grandfather was gone. I felt further away than ever, and I started thinking about the timing of things. Thank goodness it was in the morning, thank goodness I wasn’t working.

I was able to catch a plane that same afternoon because I didn’t have to be anywhere else, nor did I have anything more important to do. In any case, at any other time, in any other situation, what could have been more important?

I saw people cry who I’d never seen cry before. People hugged me who had never hugged me before. I realized how surreal the ritual of saying goodbye to a loved one is. None of it makes sense. I realize that emotions haven’t found a proper place in the material world. I even think that the fairest thing would be for the body to vanish along with the soul.

It makes me very sad to think that he’s no longer here and that my life goes on as usual. How is that even possible? I’ve been thinking about him a lot since he’s gone, and it makes me so angry to think that I didn’t before. I think of all the time I’ve been far from home, that in the last six years I might have spent less than 48 hours with him in total, and there’s no way to go back. I can’t remember if I ever told him I loved him.

I feel like I have no memories. The distant memories from when I was little are fading. The recent ones are just a few fleeting moments without much importance, moments I didn’t hold onto, memories that weren’t even created. I feel more than ever that I’ve been far away. It hurts me deeply to think that this is something that will keep happening, that it’s something I will go through again.

I’m questioning things: where I am, where I’m going, where my place is, where my people are.

I’m writing this, and nothing I say feels important enough, everything seems shallow. I feel like I’m no one to talk about this, that I haven’t said anything worthwhile, that I haven’t truly expressed what’s inside me. Maybe I haven’t, or maybe I don’t know how. Maybe it’s better this way.

I think a lot about the tomatoes he planted on Saturday, and it makes me so sad to think that no one will take care of them. I’d never stopped to think that there would come a summer when I wouldn’t eat tomatoes from my grandfather’s garden.
