Puerta A06

Llevo cuatro meses sin trabajo. Entendiendo trabajo como lo define la RAE: ocupación retribuida. Porque trabajando y ocupada estoy —de hecho, casi más que nunca— pero sin ningún tipo de flujo monetario circulando hacia mi cuenta bancaria.

Y vengo aquí a hablar alto y claro: está siendo más difícil de lo que pensaba.

Mis días son inciertos y borrosos. Tengo una lista interminable e inabarcable de cosas que quiero hacer, pero que no hago porque nadie me obliga, o no estoy de humor, o simplemente no me apetece. Y eso me hace sentir mal. No tengo donde aferrarme. No tengo ninguna fecha de entrega, no tengo que estar en ningún lado a ninguna hora, no tengo nadie que me obligue a hacer nada. Soy yo contra mis ganas. Estoy sola en esto y eso es así.

Mi psicóloga me ha mandado que me haga un plan, que priorice, que me ponga horarios como si de un trabajo se tratase. Y que lo cumpla. Y de verdad que lo intento, pero no es tan fácil. Quiero formarme porque estoy empezando de cero, quiero crear mis cosas y ampliar mi portfolio, quiero solicitar trabajos porque no sé cuándo una oportunidad podría ser la mía. Solo os digo que, además de todo esto, una de mis tareas es «organizarme la vida», para que podáis entender lo mal que se me da gestionar mis propias expectativas. No es de extrañar que nunca esté satisfecha.

Mi casa es muy pequeña y cada día se encoge más. No quiero ir a trabajar a cafeterías porque ya me cansa, porque «pa’ qué salir con lo bien que se está en pijama y sin lavarme el pelo en seis días», porque gastarme 4 € por café (casi) cada día no es una decisión de lo más inteligente —aunque coger un avión cada dos por tres porque siento que necesito escapar lo es aún menos y sí que lo hago.

Cada vez que envío un currículum me imagino la vida que tendré si me diesen el trabajo. Cuando en la entrevista me explican cuáles serán los siguientes pasos en caso de seguir y me preguntan qué día podría empezar, yo ya me estoy organizando la agenda. En mi cabeza me preparo para cosas como cambiar mi horario de ir al gym o mudarme de país. Y luego me llega otro email de rechazo y se me desmonta otra vez la vida. Otra vez vuelvo a mi rutina de no-rutina y a vivir con el suplicio de no saber cuándo acabará. A vivir en una constante montaña rusa de ilusión y desilusión.

En mi caso, he dado un volantazo en mi carrera profesional y estoy empezando de cero. Y es muy difícil empezar de cero. ¿Cómo se empieza de cero cuando las posiciones entry level requieren de 2 a 5 años de experiencia? ¿Cómo se empieza de cero cuando la sociedad sufre una titulitis desmesurada? ¿Cómo se empieza de cero cuando tienes un alquiler que pagar cada mes? ¿Cómo se empieza cuando el mercado está saturado? ¿Cómo se empieza cuando nadie te da una oportunidad?

Acostumbrarte a recibir rechazos de trabajos, uno detrás de otro, significa acostumbrarte a dejar de ilusionarte. Significa acostumbrarte a sentir que estás tirando tu tiempo y energía a la basura. Significa acostumbrarte a que la gente, sobre todo los que ni responde, no valore tu tiempo. Significa acostumbrarte a sentir que nunca lo conseguirás, que no hay sitio para ti, que nadie te valora. Significa acostumbrarte a creer en ti un poquito menos cada vez.

Yo pensaba que tener todo el tiempo del mundo sería ideal: podré llevar a cabo todas mis ideas y mis proyectos, podré ponerme fuertísima, podré viajar, podré estudiar, podré leer, podré escribir. La realidad es que sería ideal si además de tener todo el tiempo del mundo, también tuviese todo el dinero del mundo —estoy convencida de que se me daría muy bien no tener trabajo. Por suerte tengo un colchoncito de ahorros que me deja respirar, pero la idea de que voy a tener que trabajar de camarera en algún momento empieza a cruzarse por mi cabeza y me da una poquita de ansiedad.

Mis días pasan como un soplo de aire y siento que nada cambia, que no avanzo. Los días se alargan y a mí se me siguen quedando cortos. Llega el calor y mi futuro sigue siendo de lo más incierto. Sigo sin saber qué va primero y qué va después. Sin poder seguir un horario. Tomándome un iced chai latte al sol sin poder disfrutar porque mi cabeza es incapaz de tomarse un descanso. Siento que estoy perdiendo el tiempo cada minuto. Incluso cuando estoy haciendo algo productivo, porque me da la sensación de que todo es en vano.

Al fin sé lo que quiero y encontrarme en situación me da miedo. Y no es miedo a la incertidumbre, a no tener un plan, a no saber qué será de mí —y menos mal, bien de terapia que me ha costado estar tranquila así. Tengo miedo a tener que retroceder, a tener que volver a algo que no me hace feliz, a no poder desencadenarme de mi pasado. Tengo miedo a no encontrar una salida, a no ser capaz de hacerlo a mi manera.

Una cosa que tengo clara es que no podría no estar haciendo esto. Tengo claro que quiero hacerlo. Algo me dice que estoy haciendo lo correcto y, aunque no lo parezca, estoy muy feliz de estar intentando hacerlo a mi manera.

I've been out of work for four months now. Understanding work as “paid occupation”. Because I am working and busy—in fact, almost more than ever—but without any type of monetary flow circulating to my bank account.

And I am here to speak loud and clear: it is being harder than I thought.

My days are uncertain and blurry. I have an endless and overwhelming list of things I want to do, but I don't do them because no one forces me to, or I'm not in the mood, or I simply don't feel like it. And that makes me feel bad. I have nothing to hold on to. I have no deadlines, I don't have to be anywhere at any time, I don't have anyone forcing me to do anything. It's me against my will. I am alone in this, and that's how it is.

My psychologist told me to make a plan, to prioritize, to set schedules as if it were a job. And to stick to it. And I really try, but it's not that easy. I want to educate myself because I'm starting from scratch, I want to create my own things and expand my portfolio, I want to apply for jobs because I don't know when an opportunity could be the one. In addition to all this, one of my tasks is "organising my life," so you can understand how bad I am at managing my own expectations. No wonder I'm never satisfied.

My house is very small, and it shrinks every day. I don't want to go to work in cafes because I get tired of it, because "why go out when it's so comfortable to be in pyjamas and not having washed my hair for six days," because spending €4 per coffee (almost) every day isn't the smartest decision—even though taking a plane every now and then because I feel like I need to escape is even less so, and yet I do it.

Every time I send out a resume, I imagine the life I would have if I got the job. When during the interview they explain to me what the next steps would be if I were to continue, and they ask me what day I could start, I'm already organising my agenda. In my head, I prepare for things like changing my gym schedule or moving to another country. And then another rejection email arrives, and my life falls apart again. Once again, I return to my routine of non-routine and live with the suffering of not knowing when it will end. Living in a constant roller coaster of hope and disappointment.

In my case, I've made a drastic change in my career and I'm starting from scratch. And starting from scratch is very difficult. How do you start from scratch when "entry-level" positions require 2 to 5 years of experience? How do you start from scratch when society suffers from excessive degree requirements (or titulitis, as we say in Spanish)? How do you start from scratch when you have rent to pay every month? How do you start when the market is saturated? How do you start when no one gives you a chance?

Getting used to job rejections, one after another, means getting used to stopping getting excited. It means getting used to feeling like you are wasting your time and energy. It means getting used to people, especially those who don't even respond, not valuing your time. It means getting used to feeling like you'll never make it, that there's no place for you, that no one values you. It means getting used to believing in yourself a little less each time.

I thought that having all the time in the world would be ideal: I will be able to carry out all my ideas and projects, to get very strong, to travel. I will be able to study, to read, to write. The reality is that it would be ideal if, in addition to having all the time in the world, I also had all the money in the world—I'm convinced that I would be very good at not having a job. Luckily, I have some savings that allow me to breathe, but the idea that I might have to work as a waitress at some point is starting to cross my mind, and it gives me a little anxiety.

My days pass like a breath of air and I feel like nothing changes, that I’m not moving forward. The days are lengthening and I still find them short. The heat is coming and my future remains very uncertain. I still don't know what comes first and what comes after. Unable to follow a schedule. Sitting in the sun with an iced chai latte, unable to enjoy it because my mind is unable to take a break. I feel like I'm wasting time every minute. Even when I'm doing something productive, because it feels like everything is in vain.

I finally know what I want and finding myself in this situation scares me. And it's not fear of uncertainty, of not having a plan, of not knowing where will I end up—and thank goodness, I've worked hard in therapy to be okay with that. I'm afraid of having to go back, of having to return to something that doesn't make me happy, of not being able to break free from my past. I'm afraid of not finding a way out, of not being able to do it my way.

One thing I know for sure is that I couldn't not be doing this. I am sure that I want to do it. Something tells me that I'm doing the right thing, and even though it may not seem like it, I'm very happy to be trying to do it my way.
